Sunday Sermons
At Cornerstone, the sermons are primarily expository in nature. We spend most of our time stepping through a section or book of the Bible verse by verse, section by section, and occasionally we will preach on a theme. The elders strive to make each sermon a Christ centered, church building, Gospel proclaiming, truth driven, biblically grounded, proclamation for the purpose of God glorifying transformation.
Our sermon is entitled “A Restraining Conscience.” Here we look at David’s interactions with Saul in [esvignore]1 Samuel 24[/esvignore]. We will examine the idea of the conscience, its role, and how it functions in David as well as Saul. We also look at the controversial idea of honoring the office of the magistrate, even when there is a tyrant occupying that office.…
In this message we look at [esvignore]1 Samuel 23, 15-29[/esvignore]. The prime meat of our study will be the first paragraph, in which we meet David’s good friend once Jonathan again. The sermon is divided into five sections: First, we gain some context by understanding David’s circumstances and how we can relate to him where he is. Second, we look again at David’s friend.…
Our first church service of 2017 brings us to a wonderful topic at the heart of Christian living – that is, the supremacy of the Word of God. This means that we hold the Bible as the sole and ultimate authority over any other sort of divine word or revelation. We learn this lesson by seeing how David returns to the Lord…
This Lord’s Day we asked “What Child is This?” Our sermon text, [esvignore]Luke 2:1-21[/esvignore], will led us to the manger, but did not linger long, for the fullness of scripture gives us the answer about this child’s unique identity. Our sermon addresses the various roles, the many names, and the multi-faceted aspects of His mission. It is largely a whirlwind tour of…
We come to [esvignore]1 Samuel 19:18-24[/esvignore] where we see how David fled to his trusted shepherd, Samuel. Here we learn of the importance of good spiritual leadership among God’s flock. Second, we look at God’s response to Saul’s madness. Here Saul and all his men are humbled, their evil intentions thwarted. Yet in God’s mercy, we find lessons about being a rebel.…
Our message from [esvignore]1 Samuel 19:1-17[/esvignore] examines the marriage between David and Michal. Here we learn important lessons about character illustrated by the great difference in siblings – Jonathan, David’s friend and Michal, David’s wife. From this marriage, we also observe five lessons regarding marriage in general. Public reading: [esvignore]Psalm 59[/esvignore] 1 Samuel 19:1-17 Psalm 59
Our sermon is taken from [esvignore]Matthew 6:19-21[/esvignore]. In this message we learn the nature of treasure, the place of its keeping, and how the object of our heart’s desire will determine so much about our personal life and our churches. In fact, it was a love of money that contributed to the need for Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. In this…
Our sermon continues into the life and times of David by studying how Saul offered David a wife from his own household in [esvignore]1 Samuel 18:17-30[/esvignore]. David’s response is very insightful, it shows us his humble nature. Our lesson examines David’s response to Saul’s schemes, then we look closely at the nature of God-pleasing humility. We learn 3 marks of false humility…
Our message comes from [esvignore]1 Samuel 18:6-16[/esvignore], the story of Saul’s envy and attempted murder of David. Saul is declining in his sanity, his sin and torment are pushing him ever-deeper into irrationality. As the Israelites celebrate the victory over the Philistines, the women sing and praise both King Saul and David, the new national hero. But Saul is displeased, for David…
Our message is from [esvignore]1 Samuel 18:1-5[/esvignore] where we find the beginnings of an unusual and unprecedented friendship. David and the royal heir-apparent, Jonathan, become the best of friends. This relationship is a model relationship for Christians. We will look at it in terms of redemptive history by examining the relationship between David and Jonathan, David and Saul, and David and the…
