Sunday Sermons

At Cornerstone, the sermons are primarily expository in nature. We spend most of our time stepping through a section or book of the Bible verse by verse, section by section, and occasionally we will preach on a theme. The elders strive to make each sermon a Christ centered, church building, Gospel proclaiming, truth driven, biblically grounded, proclamation for the purpose of God glorifying transformation.

To interpret and apply his text in accordance with its real meaning, is one of the preacher’s most sacred duties.John Broadus, On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons

The Ongoing Need for the Knowledge of God

We enter into Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church, and by extension, for us. He prays in [esvignore]Ephesians 1:15-19[/esvignore] that the church might have their eyes opened to know God in three ways – he wants them to know the  hope to which he has called them, the riches of their inheritance, and the immeasurable power of Christ toward us. Join us…

A Plan for the Fullness of Time

In this third of three sermons from [esvignore]Ephesians 1:3-14[/esvignore], we round out the examination of our many blessings in Christ by looking at our present and future riches in Christ. Here we learn that we are now blessed with the knowledge of the mystery of His will and that we shall in the future be blessed at the summation of all things…

The Vocabulary of the Gospel: Predestination (Reformation Day 2014)

As we continue our series in Ephesians, we look again at Paul’s great eulogy at the beginning of his epistle to the church at Ephesus. We focus on [esvignore]Ephesians 1:3-6[/esvignore], and specifically, the doctrine of divine election, also known as predestination. This doctrine is intended by the Lord to be an encouraging concept to us, to lift our hearts in joy. Sadly,…

The Vocabulary of the Gospel

We look at the massive, 202 word sentence that Paul opens with in his letter to the Ephesians. In [esvignore]Ephesians 1:3-6[/esvignore], Paul bursts forth in a eulogy of praise to God for His many blessings. It is these blessings that form a new vocabulary for the New Covenant believer, one that encourages, lifts us up out of despondency, and makes us glad.…

Galatians Review – Right and Wrong Motives for True Religion

In this final sermon of our series on [esvignore]Galatians[/esvignore], we look at Paul’s parting words in [esvignore]Galatians 6:11-18[/esvignore]. Here we discover the summary of the Galatian problem and its solution at the foot of the cross of Christ. Rounding out this sermon series with an exhortation to consider ourselves in light of the crucified Christ, we are encouraged to be humble but…

Third Anniversary Sermon

As we celebrate 3 years of God’s very good grace, we have traditionally gone back to the passages we looked to in the early days of our congregation. In this sermon, we remember the principles taught by the first congregation in Jerusalem when more than 3000 souls were added to the church in one day.…

Restoring One Another

Our message from [esvignore]Galatians 6:1[/esvignore] encourages us to embrace the good grace of being corrected by our brethren. But there is so much more to it than that. We learn that isolation is unbecoming of a Christian, for we are family. In this message, five lessons from our text and some application drives home the necessity for healthy church members to be…

Christianity, Heresy and The Offensive Religion

We continue our study in Paul’s letter to Galatia with [esvignore]Galatians 5:7-12[/esvignore]. Here we confront the topic of heresy. In this message, Pastor Head shows that obedience to the truth (v.8) is illustrated by one of Paul’s favorite analogies – the foot race. The Galatians have been hindered from running the good race because of the Judaizer’s false doctrine. They have been…

An Allegory of Ishamel and Isaac – Descent by Flesh or Sons by Spirit?

In this message we see how Paul presses the Judaizers’ argument to its necessary outcome to show that claiming sonship from Abraham by the flesh leads to damnation. Only those who are sons by Spirit have the hope of reaching the eternal Jerusalem above. Thus, the Judaizers and all who point to Father Abraham by physical birthright are actually more like Ishamel,…

Born Slaves or Adopted Sons Part 2

We re-visit [esvignore]Galatians 4:1-11[/esvignore] to explore the glorious doctrines of adoption and sonship. In part 1 of this two part sermon, we studied guardianship, then focused on slavery and bondage to the elementary principles of the world. In this second part, we learn that merely being set free from bondage and death is only half of the story. We need more. Come…
