Sunday Sermons
At Cornerstone, the sermons are primarily expository in nature. We spend most of our time stepping through a section or book of the Bible verse by verse, section by section, and occasionally we will preach on a theme. The elders strive to make each sermon a Christ centered, church building, Gospel proclaiming, truth driven, biblically grounded, proclamation for the purpose of God glorifying transformation.
In today’s culture, the word “submit” is a terribly offensive term. If used in the context of a wife’s duty to her husband, its even more offensive. Christianity, however, is not a cultural faith, we must follow God rather than men and feminists. But Paul’s instruction to wives in [esvignore]Ephesians 5:22-24[/esvignore] is indeed to submit…
Here we look at the greatest challenge of our day – Christians standing firm for, and remaining true to, the Biblical design for gender roles and marriage. This sermon will serve as an introduction to a deeper investigation of [esvignore]Ephesians 5:22-33[/esvignore] and will establish why it is so very critical to get this doctrine right.…
Our sermon is taken from [esvignore]Ephesians 5:18-21[/esvignore]. We will examine the command (yes, the command) to be filled with the Spirit. What does Paul mean by giving Christians the imperative command to be filled with the Spirit, if the Spirit is in us already by regeneration? We will also examine four beneficial results of living a life filled with the Spirit. We…
As we examine [esvignore]Ephesians 5:11[/esvignore], we find a dual command – first have nothing to do with, or no fellowship with, the evil deeds of darkness. But second, we are to expose or illuminate those deeds. This is a continuing Pauline use of the excellent “light vs. darkness” illustration that helps us understand our role in a dark world. In this sermon…
We continue our study of [esvignore]Ephesians[/esvignore] by examining [esvignore]chapter 5[/esvignore] [esvignore]verses 6-14[/esvignore]. In this sermon we will linger upon the warning Paul gives the Ephesians in order to learn yet again the great importance of being a peculiar people and having no partnership with sin. How do we avoid giving a foothold to sin? How do we heed the warning? Ephesians 5:6-14
How should we think, and how should we NOT think, about sexuality? In this sermon we learn about keeping one’s self holy with regard to sexuality. From [esvignore]Ephesians 5:3-5[/esvignore], the commands of Paul include putting off the world’s corrupted view of sexuality and taking up the Bible’s view of intimacy as a wonder and a gift. Rather than treating God’s good gift…
In this message we move into [esvignore]Ephesians 5[/esvignore]. Our passage, [esvignore]Ephesians 4:31-5:2[/esvignore], summarizes the preceding examples of Paul’s principle of put off and put on, but introduces the overall motivation for why we are to practice any of the Christian life. It is the forgiveness offered by Jesus Christ. What a good and convicting message to hear on Resurrection Sunday! Our sermon…
We have been looking in detail at Paul’s examples that illustrate the put off/put on principle for Christian behavior. In [esvignore]Ephesians 4:25-5:2[/esvignore], we find several very direct instructions. In this sermon, we will examine [esvignore]verses 28-30[/esvignore] and learn how important it is for Christians (yes, Christians) to consider their own hearts when it comes to theft and a foul mouth. We also…
Paul has given us a principle for Christian behavior for the purpose of nurturing untiy and peace. In [esvignore]Ephesians 4:25-5:2[/esvignore], we find several. In this sermon, we will examine [esvignore]verses 25-27[/esvignore] to learn how to deal with lying and governing anger. Paul encourages us to put on the righteousness of Christ to mortify the flesh, we learn here what that looks like.…
Here we jump into an extended application section of our sermon from two weeks ago, Walking in the New Life. We learned that our task as Christians is to renew our minds and to put on the new man. Jumping off from [esvignore]Ephesians 4:20-24[/esvignore], we learn how to do just that. Drawing heavily from other passages and using tools from our forefathers…
