Gospel of Matthew – Follow Me

Our sermon is entitled “Follow Me” and will be taken from [esvignore]Matthew 4:12-25[/esvignore]. As we move through the gospel verse by verse, here we encounter the calling of the first four disciples. This is an easily overlooked passage in the gospel of Matthew, the meat of the story of Christ’s introduction is over, and the Sermon on the Mount begins in the very next chapter. Between those two section, it can be very tempting to speed past our text. But we will see that there is yet another prophetic fulfillment here, and we will learn that Jesus came with a methodology for his ministry. Finally, we will note that in His work on earth, Jesus doesn’t ask, He commands. I pray we all will be blessed, learn some things, and be challenged by the ministry of the Word tomorrow. Here is the outline if you are a note-takers:

  1. Fulfillment – Light into great darkness
  2. The Methodology
    1. Preaching and teaching
    2. Who was called, pros or amateurs?
    3. The cost of following Jesus
  3. The Lessons
    1. It is a command, not a question
    2. Obedience is not optional
    3. A Gracious command: “Follow Me”
