This week’s preaching comes from[esvignore]2 Samuel 21:15-22[/esvignore]. This is the second story of six found in the epilogue at the end of the book of Samuel. In this rather sad picture of mighty David, now weary in his older years, we will find the old warrior needs a little help. Six fingered men and giants from our old pals the Philistines are at it again. David and his mighty men are the tools of our Lord in silencing the foes of Yahweh God – it never goes well for those who accuse the Lord’s people and mock the One True God. In these brief and seemingly dry battle reports, we learn some very timely truths about weariness, aging, isolating ourselves, spiritual drift, and vital importance of being part of the church. We have a collective ministry to one another. Here’s the outline:
- The Aging King and the Same Old Enemies
- Fixing the story in time
- Remember those Philistines?
- Taking the Car Keys from Grandpa
- Silencing the Giants
- Text Troubles
- No need for doubt
- Kingdom Victory in Strength and Weakness
- Physical weakness
- Spiritual Drift
- Why you need the church
- Collective gifts
- It’s Christ’s Way
