Our text this week is [esvignore]1 Samuel 10:17-27[/esvignore]. Before we jump into the era of monarchy, we partly review the state of Israel’s heart as we witness the selection of Saul as king. We will investigate how the heart of the people is very much a warning for us to examine our own hearts. The warning Samuel gave Israel regarding their abandonment of Yahweh is repeated during the installation of Saul. Israel ignores that warning yet again. Israel collectively points us to ourselves and gives us another opportunity to do some self examination. Christians indeed do “backslide;” we can suffer from doctrinal drift. How can we deal with this so that we can right our course willingly and quickly instead of bringing on the Lord’s discipline?
