Hospitality As An Expression of Love

Our sermon is entitled “Hospitality As An Expression of Love” and we will be launching from 1 John 3:15-18. I hope to show how it is a vital part of the Christian life, necessary for a vibrant community, and a command from God. I do not wish to lay burdens on people, which is what these kinds of sermons can sometimes be perceived as doing. But I think there will be some creative ideas for us to consider. I hope to break us out of the picture we tend to hold on to about what hospitality is, and hopefully they will help us all be obedient to what is a Biblical command. We’ll consider the following outline items:

  1. Why We’re Talking About Hospitality
  2. The Basis of Hospitality
    1. Hospitality is grounded in the Love of God and Love for Others
    2. Hospitality is grounded in the Welfare of our neighbors.
      1. Self denial
      2. Compassion
    3. Hospitality is grounded in Obedience to God.
    4. Hospitality is grounded upon the Desire for God’s Glory.
  3. Practicing Hospitality

Public reading:Matthew 25:31-40; Benediction:Numbers 6:24-26

1 John 3:15-18

15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (ESV)

Matthew 25:31-40

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ (ESV)

Numbers 6:24-26

24 The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. (ESV)
